Title: Re: [SBB] California Quail
chicks
I search of SSB in previous years shows that these quail chicks
are not late at all.

California Quail grow up in our yard in the past weeks (passing
through every day or so on their rounds), but TODAY we had a new
family of 10, that had just popped out of the eggs. In fact,
they looked like little brown eggs with feet.
I was forced to stay out of the back yard
for several hours. They seem to be gone now, but I can't imagine
that the little guys can fly over our fence. Maybe they were
born under our deck."
On July 10, 2005 this message appeared:
"The quail pair have finally brought their group of nine
youngsters to the backyard. For several weeks, the pair would
come a couple of time a day to feed and drink. The male is
always so protective, sitting high on a bush to watch the female.
The interesting behavior is that now there are two adult plumage males
bring the young ones in. The female is nowhere to be
seen."

"Our first quail babies this year (5-6). They are about the size
of a Junco. I first saw them in the front yard in our Juniper
"forest". I don't know if they can fly to get to our feeder
area (we have a tall fence), because I had left the gate open. We have
4-6 adult pairs coming to the feeder each day, so I guess there will
be a lot more babies."
And on June 28, 2006 Barbara again:
"Monday afternoon the first quail chicks were brought into the
back yard by their parents. There were 10 to 15, hard to count
when they're running around in and out of bushes. They about the
size of a tennis ball....so round and fluffy. I don't recall
seeing such small ones in years past."

9 TINY chicks. He is maintaining an alert posture as he scans for
danger while his family is scratching the dry grasses in search of
food. Not a sound from any of them.
