It was cool and cloudy, perfect weather for birding the 2.7 mile Stile
Ranch/ Fortini trail in Santa Teresa Co. Park this morning June 12. Three
Yellow billed Magpies were flying low in the field along San
Vicente. W. Meadow Larks were seen singing from fences and heard
elsewhere. A juv. Rufous-crowned Sparrow was the first of
twenty-one RCSP seen or heard. Northern Rough-winged, Cliff, Barn or
Violet-Green Swallows were nearly always in sight. In a meadow over the
first ridge I found a W. Kingbird, first of four Ash throated
Flycatchers and the first of three singing Lazuli Bunting
males. I saw only one Rock Wren, pivoting on a rock across the
fence on the IBM property. Three calling C. Ravens and seven Am. Crows
were seen from the Mine trail. A Coopers Hawk perched in a tree along the
Creek, would occasionally fly out and upset the birds. Three
White-tailed Kites were seen to the east, none close enough to note
juv. plumage. One adult Red-tailed Hawk was perched on an antenna on a
high peak. I saw four Wrentit along the trail and heard seven
more. I happened to look up at the right moment and saw a huge Wild Pig
leading eight large piglets along a higher trail. Two pair of Cal. Quail
and finally a whole family of quail were seen. A pair of W.
Bluebirds feeding fledglings near a ranch house on the Fortini trail.
I had singing Lazuli Bunting, Hutton's Vireo, Nuttalls Woodpecker, and
Spotted Towhee along the creek. Western Kingbirds were found nesting on a
telephone pole near the red house on San Vicente. Three nestlings could
be seen with adults tending them. Conspicuously absent were Am. Kestrel,
and Cal. Thrasher.
