The Western Screech-Owl was at Rancho San Antonio from 6:30pm to 8:30pm today, June 9. I was wandering around the park from 7:00 to 8:00, but I'm pretty sure it stayed there during that hour. I didn't see any of the birds that Tom mentioned, except for the Western Bluebirds. Rare birds for me (although I know they are common for other people) were White-breasted Nuthatch and Violet-green Swallow. I also finally saw the bobcat that everyone has been talking about. I'll post my photos in a few days.

Hey, there's no such thing as a bad birding outing, right? And negative
results can be useful, right?
Anyway, yesterday morning I tried for the Western Screech Owl at Rancho San
Antonio between 8.15 and 9.15, no luck. But while I was hanging out, I got
pictures of a Great Blue Heron in the meadow between path and road, a
Western Bluebird, a female BLACK-HEADED GROSBEAK who sat atop a tall tree
like a singing male (there were TWO males singing in the vicinity), and
(extremely distant shot) a singing WESTERN WOOD-PEWEE atop another tall
nearby tree. Well if you can call that sub-oscine "peeeer" a song. There
was at least one other one singing in earshot.

Then I took me over to the reported Pygmy Nuthatch nest along San
Francisquito Creek. Watched the little hole for nearly an hour, no luck. No
photos either, but plenty of regular birdsong and activity, including a
singing BULLOCK'S ORIOLE.
OT: Last weekend I was in New Haven, CT, and managed to sneak in some bird
photography at the end of business. If anyone is going there, I really
recommend Sandy Point in West Haven, a nesting site for Least Tern, Piping
Plover, and Black Skimmers. Pix at http://www.pbase.com/tgrey/newhaven06
