Thanks to all the replies to my cowbird question. Tried Calero this
morning. No luck on the cowbirds but did have a very cooperative
COOPER's HAWK on one of the trees over the road into the stables. He
was bird 160. There were also 49 WILD TURKEYs on the way in. Next
tried Arzino Ranch. No cowbirds, but did see 11 male TRICOLORED
BLACKBIRDS. Drove up to the summit of Sierra Rd. At the intersection of
Felter Rd. and Calaveras Rd. had a flock of 30 LARK SPARROWS on
telephone wires. At the summit of Sierra Rd. there were 11 HORNED LARKS
in the grass until an immature GOLDEN EAGLE flew over very low and
there were 23 HORNED LARKS in the air. A BARN OWL was in the pines at
the Elm Picnic Area of Ed Levin Park. Also tried the Baylands, not a
cowbird in sight, hardly any blackbirds at all. Maybe the lack of
cowbirds is a hopeful sign for the small birds come this spring....
