[SBB] Glaucous Gulls, Alviso EEC

This afternoon (21 Jan.) I checked pond A-16 near the S.F. Bay National
Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center in Alviso, hoping to refind
Al Jaramillo's Slaty-backed Gull. No luck with that species, but there were
three Glaucous Gulls (2 first-cycle and 1 second-cycle) among the 300 or so
gulls roosting on the pond's southern levee. The 2 first-cycle birds
disappeared after a jogger flushed these birds, but the second-cycle bird
hung around for over an hour. Gulls were constantly moving from the Newby
Island landfill to this pond, then westward over the railroad tracks, and at
any given time there were 1,000-2,000 gulls in A-16 (predominantly
California, Herring, and Glaucous-winged, but with good numbers of Western,
Thayer's, and Ring-billed, and more than a few Mew and Glaucous-winged x
Herring hybrids).
