Hello all. I am a birder from San Diego, but my parents live in East Gilroy along the 152. I have occasionally seen postings from Gilroy on this listserv, and wanted to notify anyone wanting to survey the magpies. From Canada Road to the Gilroy Hotsprings/Henry Coe entrance there are usually several groups of Yellow-billed Magpies. I usually count them every Christmas when visiting my parents. The largest group I observed last Christams was only fifteen (with singles and doubles elsewhere along the road), but my Dad who walks up the hill almost everyday has observed about fifty at one time in the area. I do not know where they roost, but was hoping someone might want to check it out if they haven't already. I would love to do the surveys myself, but of course cannot, and my Dad is unwilling to survey. Sorry if everyone knows this info. already, but I just wanted to let anybody who is interested know.
