On Saturday, 14 Jan 06, I decided to check out places near home and went to
Calero Reservoir. Here I had the adult BALD EAGLE perched in an oak tree
right along the north shore, between the two dams. Also, a SPOTTED SANDPIPER
was working the edge of the boat launch.
At Ogier Ponds I had a repeat of the action I witnessed on 30 Dec 05, in
that I flushed a RED-SHOULDERED HAWK from a sycamore along the entrance
road, which was immediately attacked by a PEREGRINE FALCON from one of the
power towers. The pond north of the model airplane park had the usual
suspects - the female REDHEAD, 4 HOODED MERGANSERS, and a pair of COMMON
MERGANSERS. A GREEN HERON flushed here as well.
At the gull pond north of the entrance road I had a HORNED GREBE on the open
water and a very immature-looking GREEN HERON perched in the reeds.
Today, 17 Jan 06, I had a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH in a row of pines along the
paved bike path that follows San Tomas Aquino Creek. These pines are just
north of Tasman in Santa Clara.
