All,
First thing this morning Frank Vanslager and I checked out the SANDERLING
and the SNOWY PLOVERS in Salt Pond A8 (I didn't bother to count the either
species but there were several Sanderling and even more Snowy Plovers). We
then went to CCFS where we found a essentially all white first winter
GLAUCOUS GULL (white primaries, a well defined black tip on the pink based
bill, a dark eye and pink legs) in the first slag pond north of
the banding trailers. The GLGU looked huge compared to CALIFORNIA
GULLS. Shortly after Pat Kenny and Roland Kenner saw the
bird (about 11:15) it bird flushed with the rest of the gulls and was
not re-found. We then checked the Waterbird Pond, Salt Pond
A18 and the mud flats north of A18. On our return trip we saw
Mike Mammoser who now had the GLGU in the Waterbird Pond. After some
time the gull flock was once again flushed and the GLGU then flew to the roof of
the long processing shed located northwest of the pond. Further up
the road (north of the banding trailers) Mike Rogers pointed out some TREE
SWALLOWS following which he was able to get a long distance view of the
GLGU which was still on the shed roof. As we left Mike R was going to try
for closer views of the GLGU.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
