Hello SBBers,
Today, 27 February 2006 at 11 a.m., at the Water Reclamation Ponds on
Church Ave. in Gilroy/San Martin area, there were about 100 swallows foraging
over both ponds. Every swallow that came close enough to identify was a
VIOLET-GREEN SWALLOW (bright white above the eyes), although many stayed
too far out to ID. There seems to be a pattern here that every time
there is bad weather on the coast, we are flooded with swallows at ponds
and reservoirs; and when the weather clears up, only a small number of swallows
remain near water bodies. However, as the temperature rises,
many can be seen in the area, foraging in small groups and
investigating nesting sites.
