Today I received a report of a pair of Evening Grosbeaks at the
Ulistac Natural Area on Friday afternoon, Feb. 17. The two birds were
contending with a Mockingbird for control of a Toyon bush in the Bird &
Butterfly Garden.
I have not been able to sight the birds myself, but the
observer is Dennis Dowling, a Biology teacher and head of the Science
Department at Wilcox High School.
The Bird & Butterfly Garden is located near the southern
entrance to the Ulistac Natural Area, along a closed asphalt driveway
leading to a pumping station.
The Ulistac Natural Area is located on Lick Mill Blvd., just
south of Tasman Road, adjacent to the Guadalupe River, just north of
Hope Drive, one long block east of Lafayette St. or 2.5 blocks north of
Montague Expressway in Santa Clara.
