On Sunday, 12 Feb 06, I visited Ogier Ponds and tried once again to find a
bittern for my county year list, managing only to flush a GREEN HERON and a
WILSON'S SNIPE. The female REDHEAD was still on the pond north of the model
airplane park. At least 5 TREE SWALLOWS were buzzing around the sycamore
tree that serves as a nest site for them, and a NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED
SWALLOW was foraging over the ponds.
Today, 15 Feb 06, I went to Ed Levin Park and visited the Elm Picnic Area.
Two BARN OWLS were roosting in the trees here, and I flushed a couple of
quiet RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS, one of which was an immature bird. An adult
COOPER'S HAWK flew into an oak tree and, when I appproached, it flushed from
a spot that had a stick nest which was just about the right size and shape
for this bird. A SHARP-SHINNED HAWK was soaring over the hills to the west
of here. I couldn't find any migrant hummingbirds today.
I failed to find the Prairie Falcon along Marsh Road, so I drove up to the
Sierra Road summit, where a small flock of HORNED LARKS was found right
along the edge of the road. Just down from the summit, a small stock pond
had 2 female COMMON MERGANSERS.
