Hello SBBers,
At noon today, 10 February 2006, we birded Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch
County Park (Gilroy area) and observed three birds of special
interest.
A WHITE-THROATED SPARROW was seen behind the restrooms in the
Campground. Either the same or perhaps another White-throated Sparrow was
recorded during the 1 January bird count, suggesting that there might be a
winter resident population of at least one.
At Twin Redwoods turn-out, the BALD EAGLE made an appearance, circling
overhead numerous times. A Bald Eagle was observed in the close
proximity at least four times in the December/January time frame. Some
years, even with frequent visits to the Park, we rarely see them.
A single NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOW is again foraging across
the dam spillway this year, keeping an eye on the nesting holes and dive
bombing the Says Phoebe and Black Phoebe when they perch inside his
territory. There is always a first bird that arrives well in advance
of the many that follow who nest in the spillway holes.
It was a beautiful day in the Park, with many expected species
too numerous to mention.
