During a quick drive past the HERONRY behind the duck pond
at the Palo Alto Baylands at 10 a.m. today, I counted 16
black crowned night herons and two snowy egrets perched in
the the palms and the adjacent eucalyptus. There was still
no sign of courtship behavior, but the herons were definitely
getting terrritorial. There seemed to be some squabbling
underway as they sought to stake out potential nest sites.

The male Eurasion wigeon is still in the area. At high tide
this morning, he had moved back up the channel and could
easily be found ijust southwest of the restroom by the
sailing station. He was feeding in the flooded pickleweed
with about 20 American wigeon and green-winged teal.
By the way, this is an excellent time and location for
viewing and photographing the Eurasion wigeon.
The channel is not as wide at that spot, so he's
usually at closer range. Also, he's front-lit. (When
the wigeon are opposite the ranger station, they're
usually back-lit.)
