I'm sorry to post this record of my failure to identify the rail I
saw today at the Campell Perk ponds. I was without optics and
looking down from the highway 17 pedestrian over-crossing into the
northern shallow end of the pond most near the beginning of the
over-crossing. The Sora/Virginia Rail was walking between small
clearings and foraging. I clearly saw the colorings both birds
share, gray sides and brown on top, but did not see either a red bill
or a yellow bill. I saw a gray bill and I saw white horizontal
stripes at the rear flanks. The bill was think at the base but I did
not clearly see how long it was. I just saw what seemed to be a
medium size rail while actually looking for the Green Heron. I post
this so others may locate the bird if they choose.
The other birds I saw:
Pied-billed Grebe
Double-Crested Cormorant
Great Egret
Snowy Egret
Green Heron
Black Crowned Night Heron
Canada Goose
Mallard
Lesser Scaup 10-12 pairs
Bufflehead 6-8 pairs (both species staying close to mates now)
Ruddy Duck 7
Red-tailed Hawk
American Kestrel chasing off Red-tail
American Coot
Rock Pigeon
Anna's Hummingbird
Belted Kingfisher
Black Phoebe
American Crow
Bushtit
Bewick's Wren
Northern Mockingbird
Yellow-Rumped Warbler
Golden-crowned Sparrow
Red-Winged Blackbird
Brewer's Blackbird
