[SBB] Rookery at Palo Alto Baylands

I've been watching the palms behind the Palo Alto Duck Pond for
early signs of mating and nesting activity. During a drive-by
at 10 a.m. today, I counted 10 black-crowned night herons
roosting in the palms and the adjacent eucalyptus.

Last year, the number of night herons roosting there gradually
grew during late February and early March. By the end of the
first week in March, I counted 65 of them there one day.
Then the snowy egrets started to arrive and drove off most
of the night herons. About a dozen pair of night herons that
had well-established nests and were already brooding remained
in the palms with their aggressive new neighbors, but most of
the night herons were displaced to the trees around the ranger
station.

In any case, the count this morning was the first time this
year that I began to see good numbers of night herons moving
in.

It was a great show last year and it sure would be nice if
that rookery is as active again this year.
