Hi all,
This morning (Wed 2/1) I saw the Charleston Rd marsh NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH
at about 9:00 am in the same location reported by Bill Bousman (1/30).
That is about 35 feet straight out into the marsh from the Parcourse 4
station sign. I had heard the chipping about 10 minutes earlier and rushed
to the spot only to have him go silent. A 10 minute vigil produced the
sighting when he popped up about 3 feet above the ground in a narrow,
somewhat open area. He then dove to the ground and cover but popped up
into the complete open 10 minutes later. He quickly moved up into the
nearby larger tree, giving an additional minute or so of viewing, before
flying east and going to ground out from the Parcourse 5 station. I was
watching this location when Frank Vanslager and Bob Reiling arrived, and I
waved them over. Frank and I were looking into a tunnel in the vegitation
when Frank saw the (a?) bird. In a few seconds I saw a bird and then a
second bird but could not identify them positively. As I write this I'm
not sure if Frank is sure of an id. Bob took up watch on the tunnel with
no results. More seaching down to the east end of the marsh did not turn
up any additional sign of the Northern Waterthrush. Typical.
Based on recent sightings, if I was going for the Northern Waterthrush
tomorrow, I'd arrive at the Parcourse 4 sign no later than 8:30am and just
listen and watch for the next hour. I'm not sure how rain or colder weather
may affect this.
Dean Manley
