Yesterday I went for a hike in Big Basin Park. At around 12:30, I saw a Pileated Woodpecker on an oak tree. the tree was one mile from the park store (first trail on the right after going over the wood bridge just ahead of the store). It was making a hole on the tree (there were already two other holes a few inches away). After working the tree for about 10 minutes, it stopped making the hole and it looked like it started eating some kind of insect. I could not see anythning large, so i assume it was small insects (ants?).
the bird stayed for about 20 minutes total.
