Hi all,
A crowd of 10 or so birders saw the Short-eared Owl tonight.
Here are some tips I went on a lark (er, whim) with a car full of
groceries and was not prepared, so I am sharing the I wish I had tips.
1. Get there by 4pm or 3:45 to park. People saw the owl from about 4 to 4:30
coursing over the ridge between Byxbee Park and the frontage road. There
were many photographers there.
2. Bring a scope!!! Definitely necessary. After the owl disappeared from
4:30 to 5pm, Dean Manley found the bird sitting up on the ridge on a little
white pipe through his scope. The bird looked like a robin or kestrel it
seemed so small. I am sure it was there awhile and no one noticed. He found
it about 5pm, so the 2 new arrivals (Vivek and me) got to see it too.
(Thanks to Dean and others for the use of their scopes. Even zoomed in to 60
power it was hard to see well.)
3. Parking lot was full at 4:35pm. Come early. I parked (I am sure
illegally) outside the Byxbee parking lot on the side of the street. There
were at least 2 other cars out there.
4. The mom in me: bring a jacket. (my teens reply, in their flip pops and
tank tops: "it's not cold out." All depends on one's definition of cold, I
suppose!)
I think this is all my words of owl wisdom! Bob's directions were perfect,
below, except perhaps for an earlier start time.
What a great sighting for Dec. 24 or 25 this would be.

go to the top of Byxbee Park?
Kathy and all,
To the top of Byxbee Park at least a half hour before dusk (try as early as
4:30 PM) and look toward the southwest over the Palo Alto Land fill.
Good Luck,
Bob Reiling
