[SBB] Sanborn, Alviso, Ed Levin

Hi Birders-

Followed up on Mike Mammoser's Dec 7 report from Sanborn CP. Walked the Nicholas trail from Black Rd to the reservoir hoping for a Winter Wren. Along the way and back had three Varied Thrush, one Hermit Thrush, four Hairy Woodpeckers, and two Brown Creepers peeling bark off a madrone. At the reservoir were the Ring-necked Ducks. Finally, on the way back, less than a half mile from the road, a Winter Wren was chipping down in a drainage. It eventually provided good views 40 feet below. This species eludes me no more in the county. The drainage is marked by a large section of steel pipe sitting on the uphill side of the road as it crosses the drainage.

Later in Alviso, at the EEC butterfly garden, there were one or two Downy Woodpeckers, two Bewicks Wrens, a Yellow Warbler, and a Townsend's. No Ruff was seen along the road.

At Ed Levin Park I ran into Dean Manley and the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. It gave many unsatisfiying, neck-straining, views. I returned to Ed Levin at 3:30pm and got my best look at it yet. It was close up, fairly low, and well illuminated by the low sun.

Dave Weber,
Milpitas
