Folks:
This evening, 12/20/06, both Dean Manley and I were wandering the
hills of Byxbee Park and eventually ran into each other as we focused
on the continuing SHORT-EARED OWL. I saw it first at the dump edge
about 1620 hr. (15 min before sunrise), as it engaged to Northern
Harriers. A bit after sunset I saw it flying around Byxbee and ran
into Dean. He had seen it earlier, but I'm not sure when.
Also, I had a strange falcon whizz by, but I didn't get satisfactory
looks. Regardless of species, it appears to be regrowing its tail
feathers, which is what gave it a funny look. It was extremely dark,
maybe Peale's subspecies. But maybe just a dark Merlin.
