[SBB] San Jose CBC, 17 Dec 2006, Alviso Sector 1&2

Folks:

Today, 12/17/06, Jim Thomas and I covered section 1&2 of the Alviso
Sector. We started at the Arzino Ranch. Working around the horse
corrals we found 19 TRICOLORED BLACKBIRDS and 4 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS
among the flocks of Brewer's and Red-wings. A small flock of
Canada's passing nearby included one CACKLING GOOSE.

We birded Coyote Creek below Hwy 237, mostly from the most upstream
netlines downstream to the riparian at the second dogleg. We found a
BLUE-GRAY GNATCATCHER with a band at the south end of the
revegetation areas upstream of the CCFS trailers. This is apparently
the same one that was banded in late October at CCFS and was last
seen at the end of October. It was with a flock of Bushtits,
Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and Townsend's Warblers. Walking north along
the creek we found three GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS at various spots,
mostly with mixed flocks of other small passerines. Eleven VARIED
THRUSH seemed a high count for this route, but probably not for this
special Varied Thrush winter.

Later, in the San Jose-Santa Clara WPCP drying ponds, we had 17+ TREE
SWALLOWS, 4+ NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWS, and 3+ BARN SWALLOWS
(immatures) over the sludge ponds. An immature GOLDEN EAGLE was
ranging widely from the drying ponds to the Newby Island
dump. Unfortunately, the drying ponds are not accessible to the public.
