Today I looked (mainly) for Warblers and Geese. The young female
BLACK-THROATEd-GRAY WARBLER continues along Stevens Creek north of
La Avenida. I heard and saw it in the creekside trees near the north
end of the Moffett housing complex. A visit to the Charleston Road
marsh didn't turn up any hint of the Northern Waterthrush.
The golf course pond at the end of Geng Road in Palo Alto had nothing
of interest when I got there about 12:30. I walked the bike path to the
bike bridge (see below) without seeing any geese, but on my way back I
saw geese were starting to come in. Back at the pond at about 1:15 were
over 100 CANADA GEESE and 2 SNOW GEESE -- an adult and an immature. No
other unusual geese turned up. A quick check at Byxbee didn't reveal
any geese. I don't know of any report of the Brant since Mike Mammoser's
on December 5, so I have no idea if it's still around. Also, on brief
checks of the Palo Alto duck pond and the pond near the east end of
Faber I didn't find any egrets at all, much less the Cattle; perhaps
a time of higher tide would be better.
By the way, at the pond at the end of O'Connor in East Palo Alto,
San Mateo Co. (just across the bike bridge from the Palo Alto municipal
golf course), 7 WILSON'S SNIPE were resting on exposed mud. This is
actually more Snipe than we've had on the count in over a decade, so
they would be worth seeking out. The marsh nearby has a number of
GREATTER YELLOWLEGS, always worth looking over.
