All,
This morning Mike Rogers, Frank Vanslager and I had a basic plumaged RUFF
in the marsh south of the Environmental Education Center entrance road.
Frank and I were just finishing circumnavigating New Chicago Marsh when the
Ruff was spotted flying across the entrance road. The only other birds of
note were several LESSER YELLOWLEGS in the same pond as the Ruff, a WILSON'S
SNIPE on the north side of the entrance road, a PEREGRINE FALCON on a power
tower east of the EEC and a couple YELLOW WARBLERS (pointed out by Mike Rogers
and Mike Mammoser) in the trees just east of the EEC building. Lots
of Dowitchers, DUNLIN and BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS in the pond at State and
Spreckles in Alviso. All of the birds in this pond were thrown into a
panic when a Gull flew low over them trailing 10-15 feet of "string" (looked
like a weight on one end) from around it's neck and wings.
Take care,
Bob Reiling
