[SBB] Red Knots (Stevens Creek Mouth)

Folks:

Today, 8/18/06, I cycled out to the Stevens Creek mouth as the high
tide uncovered. It was a slow uncovering as the starting point was a
low-high tide. First shorebird use was a juvenile LEAST SANDPIPER
(my first this fall) at 1235 hr. I saw my first RED KNOT at 1345 hr,
a molting bird with most of its alternate mantle feathers, scapulars,
and wing coverts, but fading in the face. I found five more bird
before I left at 1400 hr: two molting birds and three
basic. Thirteen BROWN PELICANS flew over, only one was an
immature. A GREEN HERON was in flight over Crittenden Marsh, which
has high water.

The refuge has dragged out four large beams to the creek mouth,
presumably from some project, and they have set them up as primitive
benches. Very nice! They also have some pond id signs, which is also nice.
