[SBB] Where do birds sleep

Hi all -

Because I teach birding classes I often get the question, "Where do birds sleep"?
It is an interesting fact that after the sun goes down all the birds we enjoy in the day disappear out of view, although know they are still out there tucked away for the night.

Lastnight upon leaving a Campbell restaurant I noticed bird droppings on the curb next to the car.  It was after sunset and quite dark except for the parking lot lights. This spotted curb was under a landscape tree in a parking lot island.  I looked up into the tree and sure enough - there were two night roosting Northern Mockingbirds.  From our vantage point we were looking up at their bellies. Both birds were sitting together quietly (pretty good for mockingbirds) looking down at us as if to say - Don't tell anyone we're up here!

We got in the car and drove away.  If you were to drive into this parking lot you would never suspect any birds were spending the night in this very visible, highly manicured well lit, landscape tree.  But, sure enough. Now I can tell my students I know where at least two birds spend the night.
