This evening Aug. 4, I did a 2 mile loop in Quicksilver Co. Park from the McAbee entrance. On the way down the Senador trail near the furnaces, I saw 15 Vaux's Swifts flying over the trees. Several appeared smaller than others and were chattering.
I may have heard a No. Pygmy Owl calling on the New Almaden Trail at 8 pm. I walked down the trail to the footbridge but the call was coming further up a steep hill. It was a little more staccato than the Merriam's chipmunk's call. I don't recall seeing a chipmunk calling at dusk but I've been fooled many times, and never actually seen a No. Pygmy Owl.
Also seen tonight were Cal. Thrasher, Wrentit, juv. Blue gray Gnatcatchers begging with adult nearby, four Spotted Towhee juveniles, a Huttons Vireo, several families of Cal. Quail and Am. Kestrels which were seen on different trails. Three White tailed Kites seen from Mine Hill trail, two Ravens were flying with Am. Crows. I found another Hairy Woodpecker tonight, my fifth in as many days, each at different parks. Many deer were feeding as the light was fading. It gets dark early at this end of the valley.
