Linda and others:
Western Tanagers are uncommon breeders from the crest of the Santa
Cruz Mountains down to the edge of the alluvial soils (they have
nested near Vasona Reservoir). They favor closed-canopy forests, but
are rarely found in the wet coastal forests of San Mateo
County. However, Santa Cruz County has pockets of forests without
much fog where they are found. Fall migrants peak from mid-August to
the end of September and are particularly common along streams on the
valley floor.
