Folks:
This morning, 4/4/06, I walked the loop at The Dish at Stanford. Walking
in from Pier's Lane on the north side I found three LARK SPARROWS near the
exercise route. I did not see them on my walk back. I've occasionally
seen birds here in past winters, but this seems late. Perhaps they were
migrants. I'm not sure that these birds breed in these foothills or near
the wet grasslands at the summit anymore. There have been no reports in
recent years. The rain let up about 0910 hr. Coming back by the dish and
starting back towards Piers Lane, I put my binoculars up to scan a field
with black birds just as an adult PEREGRINE FALCON flew in and struck a
Western Meadowlark. The falcon then flew off to the north a bit to consume
its prey on one of the dead trees there. Within seconds, two territorial
males started to sing again their competing songs. Such is life.
