Re: [SBB] Long-tailed ducks!! (no)

Hi all,

I checked out the Baylands to day in search of the Long-tailed ducks from
about 10am to 12noon.(My daughter’s class was doing a canoe trip with Save
the Bay, and I got to take photos. Birded in between.) The tide was out, and
I doubt that Long-tailed Ducks like mudflats! I also scoped the bay from
the observation deck – scaup, ruddy ducks, canvas backs, but nothing
obviously different. Of course, it would probably have been in Alameda
County the ducks were so far out. I did see a Northern Pintail, male. It has
a long tail, but ….. And I found the 2 male Eurasian Wigeons.

The male Pheasant was present and he had a female with him. Good for them!
Is this a new event or has she been there for awhile?

Good birding

Kris

Today (thursday) I took Jeff Skrentny from Chicago to various spots around
the county. We started at the Baylands, but failed to see the Eurasian
wigeon, but after we parted, Jeff went back there and immediately saw the
wigeon. As he was watching it, FOUR LONG-TAILED DUCKS flew into the channel
near the parking lot at the interpretative center. Jeff is familiar with
these birds from Lake Michigan. He said they seemed to be paired up, with
one approaching alternate plumage. He called me with this report at 6
PM. Perhaps the big storm hitting the north bay pushed them down here for
shelter.
