It was a beautiful morning for birding along Casa Loma Rd. with my friend Cait Hutnick this morning. The new Open Space Preserve, Rancho Canada del Oro was quiet with no other visitors when we arrived. Cait did her thing, which was photographing mushrooms and whatever else she found interesting. I birded and was surprised to spot two male VARIED THRUSH on a lawn on the far side of Llagas Creek. Other highlights for me were flocks of Wild Turkeys with males displaying, calling Huttons Vireo (7), a Yellow billed Magpie, Fox Sparrow, Hermit Thrush, White tailed Kite, and a GOLDEN EAGLE. Cait was thrilled to find her first Arboreal Salamander.
The gruesome sight for the day (there's always one) was the foot and leg bone of a large bird dangling from a telephone wire. It must have been perched when something very large plucked it off the wire, leaving the talons still clutching the wire.
On the way home tonight I spotted an OSPREY perched on a power tower at McAbee and Golden Oaks.
