The number of BLACK CROWNED NIGHT HERONS continues to
grow. During quick drive-through at 10 a.m., I counted 75
night herons around the edge of the duck pond and in the
palms where they nested last year. This is the highest
count I've seen there. I could hear at least a few more
in the trees around the ranger station. Overall, I would
imagine that there are 90-100 in the area, after making
allowance for what is out of sight. I only saw one night
heron flying into the palms with nesting material, but
there were a dozen that seemed to be staking their claim
to nest sites.
