On Saturday morning, 25 Mar 06, I headed over to Almaden Quicksilver Park.
Along the way, I saw a GOLDEN EAGLE on the power tower nest just north of
Calero Reservoir. At the park, an adult COOPER'S HAWK was being very vocal
at the Mockingbird Hill entrance parking lot. I'm sure they are nesting in
this vicinity. Singing ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLERS have probably been around for
some weeks, but a single singing HOUSE WREN may be more recent. Flocks of
YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS foraging through the blue oaks included good numbers
of "Myrtle's". A female ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRD had just started building a nest
right alongside the New Almaden Trail. As I watched some TURKEY VULTURES
soaring overhead, my eye was caught by a circling PRAIRIE FALCON that
eventually moved off towards the south.
On Sunday morning, 26 Mar 06, I went to Ed Levin Park in the Diablo
foothills. A male ALLEN'S HUMMINGBIRD put on a courtship display at the eucs
near the Spring Valley Picnic Area. At the Elm Picnic Area at least 3
BULLOCK'S ORIOLES were singing and chattering. A BARN OWL was roosting in a
pine tree near the southeast corner of the playground there.
