Hi All,
Yesterday 3/26/2006 at least one Pine Siskin was
nibbling among the budding new growth of Valley Oaks beside
Arastradero Lake at that Preserve. Lesser and American Goldfinches were also
present, as was a couple of Purple Finches. A pair of Common Mergansers were at
Felt Lake.
I checked about 35 nestboxes in and around the
Preserve and found almost no nesting activity yet - a relief, actually, as the
prolonged cool, wet weather is mightily hard on nesting birds. A couple of
Oak Titmouse nest starts - mossy rings about 1" deep - showed that they are
feeling hopeful now, at least . Ordinarily I would be expecting a
fair number of OATI eggs by now.
This morning, 3/27, up at the intersection of
Skyline Blvd. and Page Mill Rd., one of the resident Red-breasted Nuthatches was
calling from the pine grove there. A hidden Sora called once at the Monte Bello
OSP Gate 5 pond. Otherwise it was very quiet as the fresh storm began to blow
in.
