SBB,

I got many replies about the color of House Finches -
Kendric wins the prize for completeness! The summary
is that they take their color from what they eat. The
yellow color is common in some areas and not in
others. Single birds in a red flock are sometimes
seen.

My mystery bird is still a mystery, although I did
receive a suggestion that it could be an immature
White Crowned Sparrow. I will look out for it and
report back if I see it.
