I even have a yellowish colored one that visits quite regularly. How common is the yellowish variant? Second question. In addition to the House Finches, there is a mystery bird. It is slightly larger than the finches. The back of the bird is similar in color and marking to the female house finch, but plainer. The breast is very plain - no streaks. The most striking markings are on the face. A very plain buff brown face with very dark eye patches. The patches go around the eye, elongated somewhat like the mask on a Waxwing. There is no crest. The bird was sitting on a bush near the feeder on it's own. Is this just a House Finch, or something else? I viewed the bird from the office window - about 20 feet from the bird in overcast light this morning at about 10.30am. I did not have binoculars. Another point of note, the other day the feeder birds were visited by a Merlin! The Merlin sat on my car about 6 feet from the feeder and waited ... it was there for about 20 minutes before swooping onto a finch. It missed and flew off. Thanks, Lisa. ===== _______________________________________________ o_o ( " ) ( | | ) " " ribbit, ribbit! _______________________________________________ __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
