I walked from the Fortini Rd. parking lot to the creek and back on the same trail. It was quiet on the way out and very birdy on the way back, which is often the case here. The HORNED LARKS I saw at a great distance on the walk north were only 20' from the trail on the way back. I counted 11 as they flew. Twelve W. BLUEBIRDS were seen along the creek today. I was able to get quite close to the sparrows this afternoon. Five RUFOUS CROWNED SPARROWS, 3 SAVANNAH SPARROWS, 2 LINCOLN SPARROWS, many WHITE CROWNED and 1 GOLDEN CROWNED SPARROW were seen along the edge of the chapparel. Four SAY'S PHOEBE'S were fly catching at various locations. Three RED TAILED HAWKS, 1 RED SHOULDERED HAWK, a pair of NO. HARRIERS and 4 AM. KESTRELS seen, many hunting successfully. CHICKADEES, OAK TITMOUSE, BLACK PHOEBE, CAL.TOWHEE, YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS, and ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS were numerous. A HAIRY and NUTTALLS WOODPECKER, WRENTITS, CAL. QUAIL, CAL. THRASHER and a NO. FLICKER were heard only. A flock of about 20 MEADOWLARKS flew into the field near the orchard. A noisy BELTED KINGFISHER was perched over the creek where I turned around. BEWICKS WREN, RUBY CROWNED KINGLETS, and HOUSE FINCHES, were also seen. I counted 87 ground squirrels in one field across from the orchard. Five Black tailed Deer and a Jack Rabbit were on the hillside. I stopped at Schillingsburg on McKean and was nearly side swiped by a big SUV passing a car on the right!! Luckily I'd pulled onto the dirt shoulder this time and stayed in the car. From there I saw the resident pair of GOLDEN EAGLES perched on a power tower next to their nesting platform.
