I went over to Vasona today to monitor the Great Blue Herons....Nest 2 has a pair, as well as Nest 4....Nest 9 has a single male and along side Nest 1 is a young male.... Lots of interaction today between males and females....lots of mutual preening, neck stretching and twig gathering. The females are placing the twigs that the males bring...two females have been sitting in the nest...Egg laying? Today while watching the herons I notices that all six herons at one time tried make themselves looks very small in the nest or in the tree...they kind of hunkered down low and twisted their necks so that their head were pointed upward towards the sky....the were watching a Golden Eagle flyover...it was amazing to watch their behavior.....about 15 minutes later a pair of Red-tailed Hawks circled the colony and the behavior was quite the opposite...the herons stretched their necks towards the sky (all of them at the same time)...they made themselves look larger than they were...Just amazing to watch. An Anna's Hummingbird checked out each heron today...it was a laugh to watch the hummer buzz the herons.... I will check the herons out on Monday.... Have a great weekend and good birding...
