This morning I walked up the bike path from the end of Geng Road in Palo Alto. A flock of about 100 CANADA GEESE was at a wet area near the end of the golf course, close to the bike path. It included the adult SNOW GOOSE and today 11 GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GEESE (approximately 6 adults). Also, the SPOTTED SANDPIPER continued at San Francisquito Creek near Geng Road, on the San Mateo County side. Back on Monday I stopped at Lake Cunningham in San Jose, following up on Steve's report. I saw 4 or 5 different CACKLING GEESE (only about 50 or so Canada's were around). All of them had rather broad and pronounced white rings at the base of the neck, pale breasts (not quite as pale as on the big Canadas), not-very-stubby bills, and were not ultra-small (although that's hard to judge); I would have called them "Aleutian", but I'm not sure how good the criteria are. A couple also gave somewhat higher-pitched and less raucous calls than the Canadas. Al Eisner _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
