From hwy 1 and 92 head north to Venice Blvd (before Rosseaux Fracaise blvd). Head to the end of this dirt road, you will see a yellow-ochre park house there and turn right into the parking lot. The gull was in the flock immediately opposite the parking lot. It was there up until 15 minutes ago (3:50 pm), when I decided I needed to come home to put this out on the Internet. Hopefully with photos to come later, as I plan to go back and take more notes right now. The bird is in its second winter. Look for: Large bulky bird with longish blackish bill. Bright yellow eye. Dark smudge around eye, crisp streaking on crown. Surprisingly, and unexpected, was a really white breast and neck. Pale and unmarked coverts, contrasting with blackish wings and tail. Mantle getting some blackish-grey feathers. Underwing like Thayer's Gull, pale with blackish primary tips. Tail mostly blackish, paler at base. Broad white tertial and scapular crescents starting to come in. That's it for now, I am heading back for more. I think this really is a Slaty-backed Gull!!!! With the caveat that it is a gull, so there are countless of ways in which one can misidentify one.
