I started this sunny morning out at Vasona to check on the Great Blue Herons....I found one magnificent adult male on Nest 1 in the colony they usually nest...this was just a thrill..... two other GBHEs were seen at Vasona as well. No other Great Blues were on the center island..... A Spotted Sandpiper was bobbing along the creek as I counted four Mew Gulls amongst the Western and Ring-billed Gulls....A Sharp-shinned Hawk was being chased by an American Crow. The resident Red-shouldered Hawk made an appearance... I checked out the Acorn Woodpeckers and a White-breasted Nuthatch was going in and out of old woodpecker holes. The usual birds were present, White and Gold Crowned Sparrows, Black Phoebe, Rock Pigeons, Mourning Doves, Nuttall's Woodpeckers, Oak Titmouse and a Ruby-crowned Kinglet made such a racket in the oak tree......I checked through the Canada Geese Flock....nothing unusual.... >From Vasona it was onto Oka Ponds....I entered through Oka Lane.... Double-Crested Cormorants, Coots, Pied-billed Grebes and Bufflehead in the first pond to the right....Two Great Egrets and one Snowy Egret in the channel.... Coots have tripled in quantity since I was there last..... In the large pond was a beautiful pair of Hooded Mergansers, lots of Ruddy Ducks and Lesser Scaup with a few more Bufflehead .... Crossed the bridge to check the Campbell ponds and in pond 3 were loads of Lesser Scaup, Gadwalls, Mallards, Coots and a grand total of 18 Black-crowned Night Herons. In the filtering ponds along Dell Avenue, were California Gulls, Ring-billed and a few Western Gulls. I counted 12 male Bufflehead and at least 15 females. One single female Canvasback was diving.... I drove to the Dell Avenue entrance of the ponds to check out the Osprey and countless Lesser Scaup. I did not have my scope so I couldn't check out the Gulls.... At the house in Rinconada Hills this morning 15 Pine Siskins, a single American Goldfinch, a large flock (20) Cedar Waxwings, CA Towhees, Gold-crowned Sparrows, House Finch, three Oak Titmice and the resident Red-shouldered Hawk.... Wishing you all a Happy New Year....and good birding.... My best regards, Linda Sullivan _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
