Madonna CP. For the daytime portion I birded with Dave and Jane Styer of Watsonville. We found many typical birds of the redwood-Douglas fir forest including 8 PYGMY NUTHATCHES, 10 VARIED THRUSHES, 3 GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLETS, and 12 TOWNSEND WARBLERS (in Santa Clara). I made a number of birding stops while driving home. At Uvas Reservoir I saw two male and a female COMMON MERGANSER and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER. Along Uvas Road I ran into a flock of 40-50 LARK SPARROWS that I missed on the Calero-Morgan Hill CBC. Stopping by Richmond, off Santa Teresa Boulevard, Janna Pauser and Rich Page showed me the adult FERRUGINOUS HAWK that has been there this winter. At Shoreline Lake I saw the continuing PELAGIC CORMORANT and a male and two female BARROW'S GOLDENEYES, as noted by other observers. A PEREGRINE FALCON was on the Ewell Court tower in Mountain View.
