"Chevron Sta. X SR 25 northeast corner; 20-30 LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCHES in an Orchard w/ Amsinckia (fiddleneck) flowers to feed on. Paicines (SBT Co.) Reservoir's pair of adult BALD EAGLE'S still present and CASSIN'S KINGBIRD on roadside fence just as getting into town below dam/berm/levee. Panoche Rd. (SBT Co. from SR 25) GREAT HORNED OWL apparently on cavity nest in cliff near bridge. Also near, w/in 15', is a nest hole used by Am. Kestrels; and same cliff possibly to be used by first (in at least 3 years here) Common Raven pair. CANYON WREN call heard while hearing CALIF.THRASHER song (Chaparral). Little Panoche Rd. (SBT Co.); another CASSIN'S KINGBIRD on fences by Panoche Inn lunch/potty stop. Good photo-op with cooperativeYellow -billed Magpies and good view of soaring PRAIRIE FALCON here. No Ferruginous Hawk found this day (no other reports as well - gone?). Ricalde Road (SBT Co. dirt Rd. east off Little Panoche Rd.) as reported, the small flock (13 we counted) of MOUNTAIN PLOVERS was at the end (before north bend) in south field. One bird was observed (PEG) to slowly crouch, "sinking" down, almost out of sight in grass/forbs - perhaps explaining how the whole flock seemed to disappear about the time other observers arrived expecting to see "our" birds! Little Panoche Road (SBT Co. about 1/2 - 2/3 distance west of Shotgun Pass three MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRDS (one bright male) were on the roadside fence. At about 3:30 PM, three CALIFORNIA QUAIL and a BURROWING OWL (near its burrow hole) were on the lower hillside south of the west base of the Pass. No Chukars were found, although one was reported here this day, earlier. Mercy Hot Springs RV Park, Little Panoche Rd. (FRE Co.); the LONG-EARED OWLS were indeed, as reported, in flock numbers (none of the 10 we found were flushed by us, but we saw birds fly when others were looking; caution is paramount). We collected a dollar each to present to the owner immediately upon arrival. Happy Birding, Phil E. Gordon Hayward, ALA Co.
