Surprisingly, I encountered only a few PINE SISKINs this time. At the first open (meadow) area past the sag ponds, there was an active flock of about 30 LESSER GOLDFINCHes; turning up among them was a male LAWRENCE'S GOLDFINCH. (I had two brief looks, but couldn't refind it after that, so it probably didn't stick with the Lessers.) This area was rather birdy, with other highlights being a flock of 20 to 25 BAND-TAILED PIGEONs and a CALIFORNIA THRASHER heard singing. On my way out I heard several RED CROSSBILLs near Page Mill Road, and saw two of them (male and female) perched atop Santa Clara Co. conifers. Next to Hidden Villa. When I arrived at the previously-mentioned spruce at about 10:30, I got a glimpse of what must have been the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, but it wasn't an identifying look, and after that it apparently went into seclusion. (I tried for about an hour.) Next time I'll get there earlier. Finally, Ed Levin Park. I was not successful in locating any owls at the Elms area; some distant Swallows were apparently Tree or Violet-green. An OSPREY visited Sandy Wool Lake. And at the Spring Valley area I saw and heard a male selasphours hummingbird, but never got a decent look at its back; I think that the fact that it did a sequence of display flights makes Allen's likely. While I was trying to pick out the Hummingbirds, a SHARP-SHINNED HAWK swooped by just off the ground, greatly exciting them, but it didn't appear to catch anything.
