When I arrived at 10:45am, all was quiet. Finally heard a flock of 20 PINE SISKINS babck up the road in the willows (up as in toward town.) They came in for very close looks. Eventually maybe 10 RED CROSSBILLS arrived, at the very tops of the tall trees (in a cedar, I think) on the Monte Bello side of the road. They few across the road around the tops of the trees but settled back in the big cedar. Though I was looking into the sun with my scope, I could see the deep coloration of the males and those great crossed bills. Also present was a male DOWNY WOODPECKER and lots of ROBINs. San Mateo County: Drove south on Skyline to Alpine Pond (zero ducks); more SISKINS. Drove north to Skylonda; stopped by the pond there: 34 RING-NECKED DUCKS, 1 COMMON GOLDENEYE and 2 female BUFFLEHEADS. North to Skyline Cemetary (highway 92 & Skyline): found 3 RED CROSSBILLS (apparently calling to each other or being territorial?--they called and called from tree tops), more PINE SISKINS, RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET, 2 TOWNSEND'S WARBLERS and, at last (for me), a RED-BREASTED NUTHATCH, calling and pecking away noisly. The nuthatch was on the next tier of lawn down from the water tank. More Siskins on our thistle feeder right now at home; they let me walk within about 5' before flying a short distance away and quickly returning for the thistle. Today 2/4/2005 I stopped by from 7:30-8AM and confirmed that crossbills are interested in those pines. Altogether I was able to confirm 76 individuals, 56 of which headed down-canyon in separate groups during my visit, 11 which headed west, and 9 which remained in the treetops. There were also several Varied Thrushes present, calling quietly from various sheltered spots around the pond. Siskins and Purple Finches were fairly numerous too, but the tallest willow along the trail has recently fallen, so they are harder to spot. The Mile 0.3 marker that was nearby to it has disappeared as well. --Garth Harwood _______________________________________________ Do not post admin requests to the list.
