[SBB] Brewers Sparrow

While birding along the Guadalupe River trail this morning I found a BREWERS SPARROW. Complete whitish eye ring, gray eye line, tan cheek and pinkish/tan beak were most noticeable markings. This tiny sparrow with pale markings and plain pale gray underparts with central breast spot was feeding in a drainage area filled with large gray/white rocks about 1/2 block north of Blossom Hill Rd.

I accessed the trail from the north side of Blossom Hill Road at Blossom River Dr. and parked in the Pier I parking lot. Blossom River Drive is 2 blocks east of Almaden Ex. past Denny's. One LINCOLN'S SPARROW was seen south of this area and three more north as I walked towards the freeway overpass.

About mid way a possible NASHVILLE WARBLER was feeding on the far bank in fennel with YELLOW WARBLERS. It had a grayish head and back with a hint of blue, yellow throat and breast and complete eye ring that didn't seem as distinct as it should be. A COMMON MOORHEN was feeding in the creek. Numerous SONG SPARROWS, WHITE and GOLDEN CROWNED SPARROWS were seen and heard.

On my walk back south I again found the Brewers Sparrow and scared a cat stalking the bird. The cat went down into the rocks and hid. Another sparrow was also feeding along the rocks that looked similar to a Lincoln's but with a larger head and coarser markings. It was flicking its tail as it fed and was very skittish. I hope that feral cat doesn't get those birds!!
