Hi!
Yesterday, at around 12:30pm, I saw a Cassin's Vireo feeding up and down the poison oak that ran half way up the Oak trees surrounding a flat, grassy clearing (just as you leave the mixed canopy hillside and where a trail turns off to the right). It's thick white eye rings and large white patch in front of the eyes (lores) caught my attention as it foraged. It foraged faster than the nearby Hutton's Vireos but it paused occasionally to look around (unlike Ruby-crowneds). It's overall shape was less portly looking than the Hutton's and its' face looked longer and thinner (because of the large amounts of white on the face?). The tawny coloring along the front of the flanks was noticeable as was the slight greenish look to the flight feathers. Its' back was medium gray. There may have been more than one, because I believe the slightly downturning no-nonsense whinny that came from the vicinity of the bird was returned by two other identical whinnies, whose owners I was unab!
le to locate by binocular.
There were sparrows everywhere and loads of butterflies! Have a great time birding!
Jean Myers
