[SBB] Solitary Sandpiper at SCVWD

I birded around the water district pond again this morning. Found two VAUX"S SWIFTS flying with a dozen VIOLET GREEN SWALLOWS and several BARN SWALLOWS. There was a flurry of activity when a juvenile RED SHOULDERED HAWK flushed the birds. Minutes later I saw the hawk perched on a snag in the river channel. A WILSON"S SNIPE flew back and forth several times. I was surprised to find a SAY'S PHOEBE perched on top of a Willow near the river channel. Several small flocks of NUTMEG MANNIKINS were seen in the rush. COMMON YELLOWTHROAT were giving a flat chip call from various locations. Over 100 CANADA GEESE flew over in two flocks.

I met Julie Bryson looking for the SOSA around 10 am. We saw two BELTED KINGFISHERS then decided to drive to the VTA parking lot on the east side of the river. We walked past a few Monterey Pines and found access to the river's edge with views of a long mud flat on the west side of the river channel. Here we saw the W. SNIPE, a dozen KILLDEER and a SPOTTED SANDPIPER. Julie found a YELLOWLEGS and finally the SOLITARY SANDPIPER sitting quietly at the edge of the water. The SOSA's upperparts looked more brown than black in the bright sunshine. We watched it preen, stretch and feed along the waters edge and left soon after.
