This evening a few of us got a quick glimpse of the Buff-breasted
Sandpiper's head and then the train went by and it disappeared. This was at
sunset, and it got dark rather quickly (the sliver of the moon is beautiful
tonight), so we didn't get a good look. We did have a great look at a skunk
in a hole peering out from the side of the levy.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a map for $6.50 plus shipping from the
Oakland Museum (I phoned in the order) that has the current salt ponds
labeled on one side, and the way the bay looked in 1850 on the other side.
The map is titled "Baylands & Creeks of South San Francisco Bay", and I only
mention it because I was impressed with it. You can find info at the on-line
