Rosalie Strait and I, after a full day of birding with
Janna, observed the Bittern flying low over the water
works pond as we were seated in the rows of benches
near the visitor parking area. This was around 3:00
this afternoon. We were somewhat dumbfounded at the
sight, but after checking the Sibley Bird Book, there
is absolutly no doubt in my mind of the
identification. We had just spent close to an hour
looking for this bird which Janna had recently seen.
The earlier part of our day was spent on the Calero
Creek trail and we were able to see several of the
target birds thanks to Janna. No Horned Larks were to
be found, however. Several Blue Birds were seen from
the road in the trees along the creek bank area. A
beautiful Say's Phoebe was a delight to observe.
