Subject: [pen-bird] Sick Murre at the Baylands
Last Sunday, late afternoon, I was walking around the Bixby area where
those weird brown poles are. I saw a murre sitting on the ground off
the path. I approached it, and he let me get very close. Then he
tried in vain to fly but ended up walking and flapping like a penguin.
He was an adult in non-breeding plumage. He did not appear to have
an injury, like a broken wing or anything. He was sluggish, but alert
enough to be very distressed about his condition. It was pretty sad.
I know there was a problem with starving murres earlier this year
since the usual summer upwelling happened later in the year than
normal. So it's probably not starvation.
Anyway, just thought I'd share the observation and have it recorded in
case it matters. I'm interested if anybody has some thoughts.
